Firefighters work at the scene of a fire in a three-story residential building on the corner of West 21st Street and South Wolcott Avenue in Pilsen on Sunday.
An intense fire that broke out early Sunday morning in the Pilsen neighborhood left 21 residents temporarily displaced, according to local officials.
The blaze was reported around 1:40 a.m. at a three-story apartment building located at 1900 W. 21st St., authorities said. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered flames spreading across all three floors of the stairwell, as confirmed by Chicago Fire Department Assistant Deputy Commissioner Mark Nielsen.
Several residents were rescued by firefighters, while a worker from a nearby factory used a forklift to assist a man in jumping from a second-floor window, according to both fire officials and witnesses at the scene.
Although the main fire was contained to the third floor, it managed to reach the cockloft, allowing the flames to spread into an adjacent apartment building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but no casualties have been reported so far.
