The Chicago Tribune reported this morning that a house fire in Aurora left three people injured and four dogs rescued. The incident occurred on the 900 block of Garfield Street, a far-western suburb of Aurora. Fire officials said the fire was reported at 9:55 a.m., and it quickly escalated into a two-alarm emergency, with 50 firefighters from multiple departments responding. A spokesman for the Aurora Fire Department noted that the two-story home was a total loss due to the fire spreading into the walls and attic, making it extremely challenging to control. Two women and one man were taken to local hospitals with injuries including smoke inhalation and cuts, but officials described the injuries as non-life-threatening. One of the women and the man were rescued from a rear upper porch by three Aurora police officers, with the help of an 18-year-old neighbor, Josue Lopez, who used a ladder to assist before firefighters arrived. Lopez had just left his home when he heard screams coming from the burning house next door. Lopez, an Aurora resident, told The Beacon-News that he rushed over after hearing a young woman screaming that her parents were still inside. He found Dave Dykstra, 51, and his wife Valerie, 50, trapped in the second-floor bedroom, covered in blood from broken glass. Lopez tried to get a ladder free but struggled until the police arrived and cut it loose. The couple then jumped to safety, assisted by the officers. The fire took more than two hours to fully extinguish, with support from Sugar Grove, North Aurora, Naperville, and Oswego fire departments. Both Dykstras were treated for their injuries and released in stable condition. Their daughter and four dogs escaped unharmed. Josue Lopez downplayed his role, saying he simply did what anyone would do in that situation. “I wasn’t thinking about being a hero,” he said. “I just wanted to help.” The fire caused over $300,000 in damage, and the cause is still under investigation by the Aurora Fire Department’s Arson Team. Local authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and ensure they have working smoke detectors and escape plans in place.
