Last Friday, the community of Vernon Hills came together to honor a local hero—U.S. Army Private Andrew Perez, a 2006 graduate of Vernon Hills High School. Members from the Vernon Hills Police Department, Countryside Fire Protection District, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire District joined in a heartfelt welcome-home ceremony for Perez, who had recently returned from a deployment in Iraq. The event featured a moving procession, with police vehicles escorting Perez in a limousine down Deerpath Road. Local firefighters and emergency responders lined the streets, waving flags and showing their support as he made his way through the neighborhood. A large flag was displayed above Deerpath Road, symbolizing the town’s pride and gratitude for his service. Perez, 23, served with the 37th Infantry Battalion near Al Saad, Iraq, and returned to the U.S. about two weeks prior to the ceremony. In addition to the emotional welcome, he was presented with a proclamation from the village, gift cards from local businesses such as Olive Garden and Westfield Hawthorn Shopping Center, and countless well-wishes from residents. Firefighters from the Countryside Fire Protection District also gathered at Station 2 to pay tribute to his service, while local media captured the moment in photos that truly reflect the spirit of the community. The celebration was not just a homecoming—it was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our service members and the deep appreciation they receive from those they protect.
