Last Friday, the community of Vernon Hills came together in a heartfelt welcome home celebration for Army Private Andrew Perez, a 2006 graduate of Vernon Hills High School. Members of the Vernon Hills Police Department, Countryside Fire Protection District, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire District joined forces to escort him back to his hometown after serving in Iraq with the 37th Infantry Battalion near Al Saad.
The event was marked by a grand procession, with police vehicles leading a limousine carrying Pfc. Perez through the streets of Vernon Hills. Firefighters from the Countryside Fire Protection District also lined up in front of their station to honor his service. A large American flag was flown over Deerpath Road, symbolizing the community’s pride and gratitude for his dedication.
Perez, who returned to the U.S. about two weeks ago, was presented with a proclamation from the village, gift cards from local businesses including Olive Garden and Westfield Hawthorn shopping center, and countless well-wishes from neighbors and friends. The day was filled with emotion, as families, friends, and community members gathered to celebrate his safe return.
Local photographer Michael Katzenstein captured the moment in several powerful images, showing the unity and support that made this welcome home event so special. It was a touching reminder of the strength of community and the deep appreciation for those who serve our country.
