Car into a building in West Chicago – 5/10/15

A car crashed into a commercial building at 1525 Kautz, located on the western edge of DuPage Airport. The driver was later seen walking along Kautz Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found the vehicle had entered the building by about 20 feet, with all gas meters damaged and the attic filled with gas. Due to the high risk, exterior operations were immediately set up while crews waited several hours for Nicor to locate and shut off the main gas line. A special request was made for the MABAS Division 10 Mobile Unit (MVU) from Lyons to assist with the situation.

The scene was quite intense, with emergency crews working carefully to prevent any potential explosion. Firefighters used the Pierce tower ladder to spray water into the building, and an ARFF unit was on standby throughout the operation. A mobile ventilation unit was also deployed to help manage the gas buildup inside the structure. The incident highlighted the importance of quick response and coordination between local departments and external units like the MABAS MVU.
