Wang Fan, party secretary and deputy director of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that real-time ocean observation data has long relied on satellite remote sensing and buoys. Submersible buoys used to observe underwater and deep-sea data can only be recovered once a year, and data can be obtained from it. Real-time data cannot be obtained like satellite remote sensing and buoys.

“This is because the top of the submersible buoy is four or five hundred meters away from sea level. These data cannot be transmitted through seawater and transmitted to the satellites.” Wang Fan said, “In this voyage, the scientific expedition team placed a The floating body of real-time data transmission is connected to the submersible by wireless and wired means. The submersible targets transmit the data to the floating body, the floating body is launched to the satellite, and the satellite is fed back to the land laboratory.”

Wang Jianing, the chief scientist of the voyage, introduced that the difficulty of this technology is to establish a stable connection between the floating body and the submersible. In addition, the offshore construction has great uncertainty and difficulty. The two sets of buoys that implement real-time data transmission have adopted wireless and wired connections respectively, which proves that the two solutions developed by our scientists are feasible.

It is understood that the real-time transmission technology of deep sea submerged observation data is jointly developed by the Institute of Oceanography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Acoustics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

“The real-time transmission of submerged data will provide important technical support for marine environment and global climate research. Real-time transmission of data will improve the accuracy of marine climate and environmental forecasting.” Wang Fan said, “This voyage cracked the data of deep sea submerged observations. Wang Jianing introduced that in this voyage, the expedition members successfully recovered 11 sets of deep sea submersibles and more than 300 pieces of observation equipment deployed in this sea in 2015, and re-arranged 14 sets of deep sea submersibles and 440 pieces of observation equipment. The world record of the largest number of observation devices for deep sea submarine deployment and recovery of single voyages was refreshed.

Wang Fan stated that through the maintenance of this voyage, China's submarine observation network in the Western Pacific has entered a stage of stable operation.

Our submarine observation network in the Western Pacific has undergone more than three years of construction. We currently have nearly 20 sets of submersibles. We have successfully obtained data such as temperature, salinity, and ocean currents for three consecutive years in representative tropical seas of the western Pacific, and will be explored by our scientists in China. To study the three-dimensional structure of the tropical western Pacific circulation, the variation of the warm pool, and its impact on China's climate change provide valuable data.

This voyage is one of the voyages of the "China's Strategic Pilot Science and Technology Project" "Material Energy Exchange in the Tropical Western Pacific Ocean System and Its Impact". It lasted 54 days and covered a range of more than 7,800 nautical miles.
