The Libertyville Fire Department in Lake County received multiple calls around 9:15 PM on Wednesday evening regarding a house fire at 516 Wrightwood Terrace. An off-duty firefighter reported smoke and flames coming from the unoccupied home. Upon arrival, Libertyville crews encountered intense fire burning from the rear of the structure and quickly requested mutual aid. As the fire vented through the roof and consumed the entire back porch, firefighters transitioned to a defensive position.
Libertyville Quint 462 and Engine 461 were positioned in the 'A' Sector in front of the house. Both units are equipped with Wil-Burt telescoping light towers, which provided excellent visibility and safety for firefighters working under snowy and icy conditions. The 75-foot aerial ladder was extended over the building, with floodlights at the tip helping to illuminate the scene effectively.
The Metropolitan Emergency Support Services (MESS) was on site, offering a canteen and a warming bus to support the crews. Despite the challenging weather, the fire was brought under control within about an hour. Unfortunately, the home was completely gutted and required extensive overhaul work.
Larry Shapiro arrived after most of the firefighting had concluded but still managed to capture some compelling images of the scene. A full gallery is available here.
