The Daily Herald reported on July 14 that construction crews are set to begin work next month on a new fire station in Palatine, marking another major step in the village’s efforts to enhance public safety. The project will see the development of a satellite fire station at 1215 N. Quentin Road, located at the corner of Echo Lane. This location is expected to serve the western and northwestern parts of the community more efficiently.
The village council recently approved a contract with a guaranteed maximum price of $2.56 million for the construction, which includes subcontractor bids, contingency funds, and other associated costs. When factoring in design, furnishings, and administrative expenses, the total project cost comes to approximately $2.98 million — just under the original $3 million budget.
While the village is hopeful for potential state funding through its capital plan, which could provide up to $575,000, officials are not relying on it. Village Manager Reid Ottesen stated, “We’re planning for the worst, meaning we don’t get anything. Realistically, I’d put it at a 50-50 chance right now.â€
To fund both the fire station and the larger $23 million police headquarters, Palatine will launch the first of two bond issues next month. The decision to split the funding into two phases was made to avoid unnecessary interest costs, as both projects won’t be completed until next year.
Earlier this year, the design of the 8,700-square-foot building was revised to stay within budget. While most changes were cosmetic, the number of firefighters accommodated was reduced from six to five. Additional savings may be offset if the village does not waive the automatic sprinkler requirement in the noncombustible attic space.
Once completed, the new station is expected to open by March or April. The existing Dundee Road station will be closed, and the space will be taken over by the Masonic Lodge. Fire officials emphasized that the new location is essential to improve emergency response times in areas currently served by the older station.
