A few images from the MABAS Home Day Open House held last week at the readiness center warehouse in Wheeling. The event offered a unique opportunity for local fire chiefs and emergency responders to see firsthand the resources and capabilities available through MABAS. The open house featured several presentations, with officials discussing various topics related to emergency preparedness and response. Attendees were able to explore the facility and learn More about the critical services provided by the MABAS Readiness Center. One of the highlights was the presence of Congressman Peter Roskam, who spoke directly to members of the fire service. His visit underscored the importance of collaboration between federal and local agencies in ensuring public safety. Inside the facility, visitors saw a range of specialized units designed for rapid deployment during emergencies. Among them was the Mobile Field Office, which expands to provide additional working space. This unit is part of the MSU-North, serving as a mission support base for the northern region. Another key piece of equipment on display was the Oshkosh P-15, a massive crash truck acquired from the Air Force. With a capacity of 6,000 gallons of water and 600 gallons of AFFF, it features two high-capacity pumps and turrets, making it one of the most powerful firefighting vehicles in the state. Though not yet in active service, its potential uses are still being evaluated. The warehouse also houses Illinois Task Force 1 (ILTF-1), the state’s Urban Search and Rescue team. This unit plays a vital role in responding to disasters and providing technical assistance during large-scale incidents. One of the latest additions to their mobile equipment is a flatbed roll-off for transporting lumber, enhancing their ability to support rescue operations. Overall, the event highlighted the readiness and dedication of the MABAS team in preparing for any emergency. It was a valuable day for attendees to gain insight into the important work being done at the Wheeling facility.
