A fire broke out in an attached garage on Schoenbeck Road in Prospect Heights around 2:30 PM today. When the first units arrived at 410 N. Schoenbeck Road, they found heavy flames spreading from the garage into the two-story home. Since this part of the district lacks hydrants, the initial response included a 3,000-gallon tanker, two engine companies, a battalion chief, and an ambulance. Additional resources were also dispatched, including an engine from Wheeling, an ambulance from Mt. Prospect, and a second tanker from Long Grove.
As the fire spread to the attic and a second-floor bedroom, the incident was upgraded to a Code 4, bringing more support, including a tower ladder from Prospect Heights, another tanker from Palatine Rural, and additional ambulances and rescue units. The alarm was later escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm, which brought even more units, such as a tower ladder from Buffalo Grove, a squad from Deerfield, and engines from multiple surrounding areas.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze, using water from their onboard tanks and later establishing a secure water supply over 2,500 feet away. Several images captured the intensity of the fire, showing flames burning through the roof and firefighters working inside to contain the flames.
The residents managed to escape safely, though the family dog did not survive. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were on scene and provided detailed photo coverage of the incident. Their galleries offer a comprehensive look at the fire and the response efforts.
After the fire was under control, crews conducted overhaul operations to ensure all hot spots were extinguished. The incident highlighted the coordinated efforts of multiple fire departments working together to protect lives and property.
