When the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) announced that the Autodesk Technology Center at the BUILD Space in Boston had been awarded the 2019 Charles J. Pankow Award for Innovation, we were incredibly proud. ASCE has long been a champion of investing in the built environment, and their focus on our aging infrastructure—especially with the global population expected to reach 10 billion by 2050—resonates deeply with us. Their recognition of innovation in the construction industry aligns perfectly with our own vision of fostering open, practical, and transformative ideas.
The Pankow Award, named after industry pioneer Charles J. Pankow, honors organizations that drive progress through collaboration and the introduction of new technologies into the design and construction sector. While we are honored to be recognized, it’s important to note that this achievement isn’t solely ours. The success of the BUILD Space is a result of the incredible community that has come together to shape its future.
This includes visionary academic leaders from institutions like MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, Carnegie Mellon, and IAAC in Barcelona. It also includes bold startups such as Pillar Tech, Lumii, and Ori Systems, who bring fresh perspectives and energy to the space. We’re grateful to our equipment partners—Howick, BigRep, FARO, and SMC—for helping us bring the tools and resources needed to support innovation. And, of course, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to our customers—industry leaders like Perkins+Will, Sasaki, EYP, Gensler, Bechtel, NBBJ, and Elkus Manfredi—who have actively engaged with the BUILD Space team since day one.
The network of Autodesk Technology Centers in San Francisco, Boston, Toronto, and Birmingham, UK, is all about bringing together industry, academia, and entrepreneurship to build a shared vision for the future of making. These spaces are not just about showcasing technology—they’re about enabling people to create better solutions with less environmental impact.
Located in Boston’s Seaport Innovation District, the BUILD Space is a research and development hub where startups, universities, and industry experts collaborate to explore new ways of advancing the building industry. Its focus areas include industrialized construction, digital fabrication, automation, robotics, and more—ideas that are reshaping the world around us.
We’ve hosted hundreds of teams over the past two and a half years, and this award belongs to them all. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and shared purpose.
If you're an innovator, a researcher, or a builder looking to push the boundaries of what's possible, we invite you to consider joining us. Whether you're a startup, an academic, or an industry leader, the BUILD Space offers a unique opportunity to explore the future of making. Join us and help shape what comes next.
