In recent years, China's equipment industry has made remarkable progress, achieving a series of significant breakthroughs. A number of major modernization projects have been completed or launched one after another, showcasing the country's growing technological capabilities and industrial strength.
One notable advancement is in the marine industry equipment manufacturing sector. On April 28th, the sixth-generation 3000-meter deep-water semi-submersible drilling platform, representing the world’s leading technology in offshore drilling, began construction at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. This marks the first time China has built such a large-scale deepwater drilling system. The platform, owned by China National Offshore Oil Corporation, is a key part of China’s deepwater oil development strategy and is included in national science and technology projects as a project with independent intellectual property rights. It follows the successful development of the "Exploration No. 3" semi-submersible platform in 1983, representing over two decades of continuous investment in advanced deepwater drilling technology.
Industry experts note that this project not only fills a critical gap in China’s deepwater drilling capabilities but also plays a vital role in enhancing the country’s deep-sea operational capacity and improving the overall level of marine equipment manufacturing, contributing to the protection of national interests.
Another significant achievement is the independent development of high-capacity transformers. The main transformer for China’s first ultra-million-kilovolt generator set was independently designed and developed by China Ordnance Equipment Group. It passed all tests successfully, demonstrating that China now possesses the most advanced thermal power transformer manufacturing technology globally. This development supports the rapid growth of super-capacity generator sets, with the product’s performance and technical specifications reaching world-class standards. The company is the only domestic manufacturer capable of producing main transformers for million-kilovolt generator sets.
Currently, the company produces nearly 90 million kVA of transformers annually, covering thermal, hydro, nuclear, and power transmission sectors. It is the sole supplier of main transformers for nuclear power plants in China, having provided equipment and technical support for key projects such as Qinshan Phase I and II, Ling Ao, and Daya Bay Nuclear Power Stations.
In the photovoltaic industry, the Datang Gansu Wuwei grid-connected photovoltaic technology demonstration power station officially commenced construction on April 26th in Wuwei City’s Chengdong Science and Technology Demonstration Park. This project serves as a pioneer for the optoelectronics industry in Gansu, opening up new opportunities for electric power development and holding significant demonstration value for the nation’s efforts to build desert-based grid-connected photovoltaic power stations.
The project, part of the national 863 Plan under the “11th Five-Year Plan,†was jointly developed by Beijing Jike Energy New Technology Development Company, Gansu Academy of Sciences Natural Energy Research Institute, and Hefei Sunshine Power Co., Ltd. It aims to construct 1MW in the first phase, 0.5MW in the second, and eventually 5MW in the long term. Located in Wuwei City, the Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province, it benefits from abundant sunshine, long hours of sunlight, and vast desert areas, making it ideal for large-scale desert photovoltaic power generation.
