On Saturday morning, September 9, 2017, just before 6:30 a.m., Buffalo Grove police and fire units were dispatched to 96 University Drive after a passerby reported smoke coming from the home. Police arrived first and began ringing the doorbell and knocking on the doors in an attempt to wake the homeowners.
Arlington Heights Engine 4 and Buffalo Grove Tower 25 quickly responded, stretching a hose line to the front door and making entry shortly after. Smoke was visible from the second floor, and the first floor was already heavily filled with smoke. As the front door was breached, thick smoke pushed out, signaling a serious situation.
Firefighters could be seen waiting for water before entering the structure, while others prepared for the intense work ahead. The alarm was upgraded to Code 4, indicating a working fire, and two additional ambulances were sent to the scene due to concerns that three people might be inside.
Neighbors later told police that the cars in the driveway did not belong to the homeowners, and the family's vehicle was missing. A thorough search confirmed that only two cats were inside the house at the time of the fire. Firefighters tried to resuscitate the animals but were unable to save them.
The incident highlighted the importance of quick response and the challenges firefighters face when dealing with emergencies, especially when no human lives are at risk. The fire caused significant damage to the property, and the community expressed concern over the loss of the pets.
