On Saturday morning, September 9, 2017, just before 6:30 a.m., Buffalo Grove police and fire units were dispatched to 96 University Drive after a passerby reported smoke coming from the home. Police officers arrived first and began ringing the doorbell and knocking on the doors in an attempt to wake the homeowners. Arlington Heights Engine 4 and Buffalo Grove Tower 25 quickly responded and stretched a hose line toward the front door before making entry. Smoke was visible escaping from the second floor, while the first floor was heavily filled with smoke. As the front door was breached, thick smoke pushed out into the air. The alarm was upgraded to Code 4 for a working fire, and two additional ambulances were sent to the scene after reports indicated that three occupants might have been inside the house. Neighbors later told police that the vehicles in the driveway did not belong to the homeowners, and the family car was missing. A primary and secondary search confirmed that only two cats were present in the home at the time of the fire. Firefighters made every effort to resuscitate the animals, but they ultimately did not survive. More photos are available at Shapirophotography.net.
