Five years ago, we launched Autodesk’s first mobile app—SketchBook Mobile for iOS—and it was a game-changer. In just 50 days, it hit over 1 million downloads. What began as an experiment in mobile creativity evolved into a powerful tool that reshaped how digital artists work. It made it possible to sketch anytime, anywhere, and turn inspiration into art on the go.

SketchBook Then & Now: Five Years of SketchBook on Mobile
The success of SketchBook opened the door for more creative apps from Autodesk, empowering students, hobbyists, and professionals alike to express themselves on mobile devices. Over the years, SketchBook has grown to serve over 27 million users. It's been featured at Apple events, highlighted in Oprah Magazine, and used by icons like Nike’s Tinker Hatfield and Garfield creator Jim Davis.
Today, as we celebrate our five-year milestone, we’re excited to launch a completely redesigned SketchBook for iOS and Android—including Intel-based Android devices. This update brings a unified experience across all platforms, so you can use the same app on your phone or tablet. With this new design, we’ve added features that enhance the creative process:
- New layer blending modes like glow and soft glow
- Advanced selection tools for precise editing
- Fresh brushes, including synthetic and smudge options (a fan-favorite)
- Dynamic flood fill with gradients
- A fully customizable UI with improved brush and color controls
- A smarter gallery for managing your sketches
- Optimized for iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iOS 8

We’ve also expanded compatibility with popular styluses, including the Wacom Intuos Creative Stylus 2 and the Pencil by FiftyThree. Whether you're using a stylus or your finger, you’ll find a smooth, intuitive drawing experience.
SketchBook is free to download on the App Store and Google Play. For those who prefer a single-platform experience, we’ve introduced in-app purchases that unlock all the advanced features for $3.99. New content packs will be released regularly.
For even more flexibility, we’ve launched a new membership program that gives access to Pro features across all platforms—iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS.
