"China's domestic automotive market is growing at a rapid pace, and the time for large-scale exports of Chinese vehicles is now ripe, according to Zhang Xiaokai, Chairman of the China Association of Automotive Engineers, speaking at the recent China High-Tech Summit on Light Trucks and Scientific Development for 50 Years. He pointed out that no major global auto exporter has managed to sustain such a massive domestic market, which makes China’s position unique. In the light truck sector, self-branded products account for as much as 95%, with production volumes exceeding one million units annually, making them a strong foundation for overseas expansion.
In recent years, driven by the rapid development of the automotive industry and supportive government policies encouraging exports, China's auto exports have maintained a high growth rate for four consecutive years. According to the latest customs data, in 2007, China exported 193,000 light trucks under 5 tons, accounting for 77.8% of total truck exports and nearly one-third of all vehicle exports.
Light trucks have become the main force behind China's automotive exports, showing strong growth in recent years. In 2005, Yuejin signed a $200 million deal to export light trucks to Russia, setting a new record for the largest single export of light trucks. Later that year, Dongfeng secured 6,000 orders at the ASEAN Expo, while Foton Ao Ling signed a contract for 3,000 units to Europe, marking the highest single export volume of light trucks in China at the time.
Zhang Xiaolu highlighted two key factors driving this success: first, the Yuejin brand incorporates Nanjing Iveco, giving it direct access to Iveco’s established international distribution network; second, Foton Motors is actively setting up CKD (completely knocked down) factories in countries like Russia, Indonesia, Iran, and the Philippines, with further negotiations underway. 'From exporting products, to forming joint ventures, and establishing overseas manufacturing facilities, the overall trend of the light truck industry going global is becoming more evident,' he said.
As China continues to strengthen its automotive exports, the focus is shifting from just selling vehicles to building long-term international presence through partnerships and local production. This strategy not only supports growth but also helps Chinese brands gain a stronger foothold in global markets."
