Recently, a nickel-cobalt smelting project that co-produces ammonium sulfate, designed and constructed by a South African company, has been successfully completed and delivered. This project marks a significant milestone in the integration of metal smelting with chemical production. It is reported that the design, construction, and warehousing contracts for the ammonium sulfate facility were approved back in 2007, highlighting the long-term planning and commitment behind this initiative.
The ammonium sulfate crystallization technology was developed by a sister company of VWS Envig, incorporating U.S.-based HPD technology. This advanced HPD system is specifically tailored for the crystallization and evaporation stages of the metal smelting process, ensuring efficiency and high-quality output. The crystallization plant employs a three-stage steam crystallization process, which enhances the purity and yield of the final product.
Once the crystals are formed, they are separated using a slurry pump and a screen, ensuring effective particle classification. The resulting ammonium sulfate is then dried in a rotary drying oven, while any oversized or substandard particles are recycled back into the processing equipment for further refinement. If operated smoothly, the system is capable of producing up to 25 tons of ammonium sulfate crystals per hour, making it a highly efficient and scalable solution for industrial applications.
This project not only demonstrates technological innovation but also reflects the growing trend of integrating chemical production within metallurgical operations, optimizing resource use and reducing environmental impact.
