The piece highlights a small district in Florida that has taken a different approach by using a non-traditional color for its fire apparatus. In most parts of the country, red is the standard color for emergency vehicles—often referred to as "fire-engine red." However, for nearly 40 years, firefighters in Palm Beach Gardens have chosen a bold yellow-green hue. They claim this color is more visible from a distance, even during the heavy rains and thick fog common in South Florida summers. Fire Chief Pete Bergel often points to a key statistic: over his 30-year career with the department, no fire vehicle has ever been rear-ended. “The color is in your face,” he says, emphasizing how it stands out on the road. This choice of color isn't unique to Palm Beach Gardens. Several local departments across different divisions have also opted for colors other than red. These include Elk Grove Township in Division 1, Pingree-Grove and Rutland-Dundee in Division 2, Glencoe in Division 3, Fox Lake and Winthrop Harbor in Division 4, Clarendon Hills in Division 10, Fox River & Countryside in Division 13, Coal City in Division 15, Lisle-Woodridge in Division 16, Elwood in Division 19, and Crete in Division 27. Interestingly, many departments in the region have transitioned from white, yellow, or lime green to red or a red two-tone scheme over the years.
