Vehicle companies should drive the development of Chinese-funded parts and components enterprises

On September 1st, the "2007 China Auto Parts Industry Annual Meeting" took place in Wuhan, drawing over 300 industry representatives from both within and outside the sector. The event featured notable attendees such as He Guangyuan, former Minister of Machinery Industry; Wang Qinhua, Director of the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Industry at the Ministry of Commerce; Zheng Xinli, Deputy Director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee; Yin Weizheng, Deputy Mayor of Wuhan City; and Ouyang Jie, Deputy General Manager of Dongfeng Motor Company. Additionally, Miao Miao, Secretary of the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee, and members of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China were present. The meeting was chaired by Hu Maoyuan, President of the China Automobile Industry Association and Chairman of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation. Gu Xianghua, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, delivered a comprehensive report on the annual conference. Highlighting the challenges facing China's auto industry, including limited self-development capabilities and a lack of core technologies, he emphasized the need for the entire industry to support the growth of auto parts companies. The report discussed strategies for building an effective supporting system and zero-setting models, urging auto parts enterprises to prioritize independent innovation and accelerate mergers and acquisitions. Vehicle manufacturers, meanwhile, were encouraged to take responsibility for promoting domestic auto parts companies while enhancing their global competitiveness and expanding market share (for more details, refer to the B3 section of this issue). Later, Shi Jianhua, also a Deputy Secretary-General of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, provided an update on the association’s work related to industrial safety. He noted that with the rapid increase in China’s auto and auto parts exports, trade tensions have risen significantly. To date, China has faced 48 anti-dumping cases. Since the early days of its WTO accession in May 2002, the association has been proactive in establishing key mechanisms, including the country’s first anti-dumping consultation center and a warning department, to monitor and respond to potential threats. As a bridge between the government and businesses, the association remains committed to fostering a safe and sustainable development environment for the automotive industry. In addition to the annual meeting, a summit forum on the development of auto parts and components was held concurrently. Organized under the guidance of the National Development and Reform Commission's Ministry of Industry, the event was jointly sponsored by the China Automobile Industry Association and the Wuhan Municipal People’s Government. The organizing committee included the Wuhan Dongxihu District People’s Government and was supported by Dongfeng Motor Company. This dual-event format provided a valuable platform for industry leaders to exchange insights and shape the future of China’s auto parts sector.
