Subject: Fire at the Alley Garage near 63rd and Francisco - January 10, 2016
---
I just witnessed something absolutely shocking last night. Around 8 PM, I was driving by the alley that runs between 63rd and Francisco when I noticed thick plumes of black smoke rising into the sky. At first, I thought it might have been a car accident or some sort of industrial mishap, but as I got closer, it became clear that an old garage in the alley had caught fire.
The flames were intense, spreading quickly through what looked like an abandoned structure. It's one of those older garages typical for this area—wooden frame, probably built decades ago. From where I stood, I could hear the crackling of burning wood and the occasional popping sound as the heat intensified. The firefighters arrived within minutes, but the fire had already taken hold.
I snapped a few pictures with my phone to document the scene. Even though the firefighters were doing their best, the fire seemed determined to consume everything in its path. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for years, and while small fires aren’t unheard of, this one felt particularly alarming because of how close it came to residential buildings nearby.
Below are some photos I took from different angles. You can see just how rapidly the fire spread. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly things can spiral out of control, especially in older parts of the city like Chicago.

This incident has left me rattled. Not only does it highlight the importance of proper maintenance for older buildings, but it also makes me grateful for the quick response from the fire department. If you live in the area, keep an eye out for updates on whether there were any injuries or further damage reported.
Stay safe, everyone!
