The shipbuilding industry is one of the oldest in the world and one of the most open and competitive. Despite the variety of transportation methods today, such as large jets and motor cars, ships are still a form of transportation that people rely on, whether they are cargo ships or passenger ships. In recent years, the Chinese government has fully realized the necessity of developing the shipbuilding industry. In addition, the integration and development of Chinese shipyards will also help China achieve its goal of 100% of the total production of the shipbuilding industry by 2015. This also fully supports the country's 12th Five-Year Plan, because the Chinese government plans to upgrade the standardization of the shipbuilding industry within five years and continuously develop high value-added products.
Technology has given important support to the shipbuilding industry in all aspects of engineering, design and life cycle management. But no matter what kind of vessel is built, the shipbuilding industry faces the same challenge – they must constantly deal with the various types of data generated during the shipbuilding process.
How to help the shipbuilding industry build a robust, scalable and interoperable network architecture that effectively manages big data while reducing costs and increasing productivity? In response to this problem, Shi Qihai, Technical Director of Extreme Networks China, shared his views.

Better, faster, stronger
The unique industry characteristics of the shipbuilding industry make the automation of daily work and the pre-configuration of equipment bring many benefits. Today, modern marine centers are generally equipped with computer integrated systems that can effectively improve ship design and manufacturing efficiency. For example, a seamless interface ship designed according to actual production conditions can effectively reduce human error, reduce labor costs, and speed up the design progress.
From a material planning perspective, shipbuilders can increase productivity and maximize benefits because process management capabilities support the entire shipbuilding process from initial design concepts to final ship purchases. If you want to remain competitive, shipyards must have strong adjustment capabilities and innovation in information management, which is of great significance for the effective implementation of shipbuilding programs. In addition, shipyards need to continuously promote their own optimization and upgrading throughout the design, manufacturing and even product life cycle.

Market demand
These requirements put tremendous pressure on the network. In view of this, the shipyard's network must be intelligent and flexible. It's important to have powerful storage and servers, but if the shipyard doesn't have a high-performance network to process the data, then it can't handle massive amounts of data across virtual servers and storage environments. In addition, shipbuilders are not able to maximize system uptime without a low-latency, highly reliable network. Customers want shipbuilding speed and quality to improve, so the shipyard's network must meet open standards to adopt the latest technology while developing existing business.

Build a flexible, unbreakable network
Lao Tzu once said that "the world is weaker than water, and the strong ones can win." This statement is a good description of what type of network the shipyard should be equipped with. The shipyard's network must have strong adaptability and programmability, so that it can be rounded like water. Next-generation networks must connect from the server core to the edge, using a single operating system to meet the needs of users for converged networks, cloud technologies, and enterprise data centers.
L&T is one of the largest and most respected companies in India, with a focus on technology, engineering, construction and manufacturing. L&T Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of it. The company's previous network architecture could not be integrated with storage space and servers, so its shipbuilding efficiency has not been maximized. Extreme Networks provides a high-density 10 Gigabit Ethernet stackable switching solution that leverages the new virtualized environment while efficiently managing the convergence of ERP and 3D design data. This network transformation has tightly integrated the company's servers and storage space with the existing computing environment, and L&T has achieved a good return on investment and confidence in the network.
How to make the network always keep pace with the times and never go out of time is also a problem that cannot be ignored. Openness and programmability are two prerequisites for creating next-generation networks. Today, there are many products and platforms on the market, and it is difficult for companies to effectively identify various solutions. In this case, companies must follow a golden rule of choosing interoperable solutions that maintain their flexibility and avoid being locked into a vendor's product. The shipbuilding industry relies heavily on technology, and shipbuilders must have a comprehensive assessment of their needs and then choose a partner that will provide them with the flexibility, reliability and scalability needed for next-generation networks.
