Schiller Park (Division 20) recently received a brand-new Pierce Impel engine in March, marking an important upgrade for the station. At first glance, the Impel and the Velocity look nearly identical due to their shared cab design, but there are notable differences in features, trim levels, and overall cost that set them apart. The new Pierce Impel 1,500/500/30A engine is now stationed at Schiller Park. This model includes advanced technology and modern safety features, making it a valuable asset for emergency response. The low hose bed design of Engine 455 has gained popularity in recent years, offering better accessibility and efficiency during operations. This style has been widely used in New York City for many years, and its adoption reflects current trends in fire apparatus design. Inside the engine, the pump panel is equipped with a foam system and color-coded gauges, providing firefighters with clear and immediate information during critical situations. These details highlight the attention to detail and functionality that goes into each unit. Recently, Engine 455 was deployed to Bensenville/Chicago as part of a joint training exercise with local firefighters. The training took place in buildings being demolished as part of the O’Hare Modernization Project, giving participants a realistic environment to practice their skills. A full photo gallery and video segment of the event are available for viewing, offering a glimpse into the teamwork and preparation involved in such exercises. Interestingly, this particular engine was originally built in 2007 and served as a demonstrator for Pierce before being acquired by Schiller Park in March of this year. As a result, it lacks the typical chevron striping on the rear, which is common on newer units. Despite its age, the engine has been well-maintained and is now fully operational, ready to serve the community. This acquisition underscores the ongoing commitment of Schiller Park Fire Department to modernize and enhance its equipment, ensuring that firefighters have the best tools available to protect lives and property.
