There has been a growing conversation online about the current status of Engine 23’s former apparatus, the 2000 American LaFrance Eagle engine, which is now part of the spare fleet. From what we’ve gathered, the original pump system was removed and replaced with a large compartment, allowing the unit to be used as a reserve squad piece. Recently, Jack Connors spotted this backup unit being used as the second vehicle for Squad 5 during an emergency call and managed to capture a few great photos. He shared them with us so that everyone can see how the unit looks in its new configuration.
This unit, now designated as Shop #D572, has undergone some notable changes. The pump enclosure has been replaced by a roll-up door, creating more storage space. From the images, it appears that the rest of the truck remains largely unchanged. The officer’s side also features a transverse compartment where the pump used to be, suggesting a straightforward conversion.
In addition to Jack's photos, Tim Olk also came across this rig during a 2-11 alarm at 118th and Yale. He snapped a shot of the unit in action, showing it being used as a backup for Squad 5. These updates give us a clearer picture of how Engine 23’s old rig is being repurposed and continues to serve the department in a different capacity. It’s interesting to see how older equipment can still play a role in modern firefighting operations.
