Today, the first batch of five oilfield motors from China North Locomotive Group's Yongji Motor Factory has arrived at a rig manufacturing plant, marking a significant milestone as it represents the largest export shipment of oilfield motor-driven rigs to the North American market. This development underscores China's growing influence in the global energy equipment sector.
It was reported that in June this year, Yongji Motor Factory secured an order to export 129 sets of oilfield motors to North America. These motors are the AC variable frequency oilfield motors developed through eight years of independent research and innovation. They reflect China’s advanced capabilities in both AC and DC field motor technology.
Oil rigs are complex and large-scale systems used for drilling oil and natural gas in challenging environments such as deserts, on land, and even in oceanic areas. The transmission system of these rigs is a key indicator of their technical sophistication and overall performance. Electric drive systems are currently considered the most advanced in the industry. The United States leads in the production of complete oil rigs, while China is one of the few countries capable of manufacturing such comprehensive systems.
Historically, China’s oilfield drilling rigs relied heavily on foreign brands for their electric drive systems. However, in 1998, Yongji Motor Factory, a leader in domestic locomotive traction motor technology, entered the oilfield motor market through its own innovative technologies. This move filled a critical gap in China’s domestic oilfield motor supply.
Following this, the YZ08 series DC motor was developed using internationally advanced manufacturing techniques and insulation structures. It offers high efficiency, reliability, and versatility, with external dimensions matching those of imported DC drilling motors. These motors have replaced over 70% of the imported electric motors used in Chinese oilfields, effectively ending the country’s long reliance on foreign imports in this crucial sector.
