Deng Nan, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, emphasized that the development of lightweight and eco-friendly vehicles is a key focus for sustainable growth. Currently, 16 major gas-producing cities and one methanol demonstration zone have been established nationwide, with over 190,000 gas-powered vehicles already in operation. These efforts have led to an annual fuel saving of 1.3 million tons. Additionally, the government has invested 880 million yuan into research on future energy and power systems, fostering collaboration among government, industry, academia, and research institutions. Hybrid vehicles have also entered commercial demonstration phases.
Deng pointed out that while the automotive industry has driven humanity into the post-industrial era, it has also promoted coordinated development between the auto sector and environmental protection, as well as more efficient resource utilization. Although internal combustion engines and petroleum fuels have propelled industrial civilization, they have also contributed to environmental degradation. In the 21st century, the automotive fuel landscape is expected to shift toward hydrogen, with hybrid power evolving into fuel cell technology. Infrastructure, storage, and transportation capabilities will be significantly enhanced.
In China, the immediate priority is to promote natural gas vehicles, followed by the development and widespread adoption of hybrid models, as part of a broader strategy to prepare for the transition to cleaner power sources. This long-term vision reflects the nation’s commitment to balancing technological progress with environmental responsibility.
