Deng Nan, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, emphasized that the development of lightweight and eco-friendly vehicles is a top priority in China's sustainable growth strategy. Currently, 16 key gas-producing cities and one methanol demonstration zone have been established nationwide, with over 190,000 gas-powered vehicles already on the road. These efforts have led to an annual fuel saving of 1.3 million tons. In addition, the government has invested 880 million yuan into future energy and power research, fostering early collaboration among government, industry, academia, and research institutions. Hybrid vehicles are now entering commercial demonstration phases, marking a significant step forward in the automotive sector.
Deng pointed out that while the internal combustion engine and petroleum fuels have driven industrial civilization, they have also contributed to environmental degradation. As we move into the 21st century, the automotive industry is expected to shift toward hydrogen as a primary fuel, with hybrid systems gradually transitioning to fuel cell technology. Infrastructure, storage, and transportation capabilities will need to be strengthened to support this transformation. In China, the immediate focus is on promoting natural gas vehicles, followed by the development and widespread adoption of hybrid technologies, as part of a broader plan to prepare for the next phase of power system evolution. This approach not only supports environmental protection but also ensures the sustainable use of resources and the coordinated development of the automotive industry.
