The Glencoe Fire Department (Public Safety Department) recently received a new unit for Squad 30, marking a significant update to their fleet. This new vehicle replaces an older 1993 Pierce Lance, which had served the department for many years. The new unit is a 2010 Pierce Saber equipped with a 20-inch raised roof, making it more compact compared to its predecessor. It features a smaller cab and a 10-inch raised roof, offering a different design than the previous model.
One of the most notable changes is the removal of the cascade system, which was commonly used in older rescue units. Additionally, the new Squad 30 has less compartment space overall, but it still maintains a strong focus on rescue and extrication capabilities. In fact, it’s roughly the same size as Engine 30, a 1996 Pierce Saber, ensuring that it can handle similar tasks efficiently.
Squad 30 is designed with deep, rescue-style compartments that are ideal for carrying essential tools and equipment. The front bumper includes two pre-piped extrication tools, which are crucial for emergency response situations. Other key features include a hydraulic ladder rack, air bags, spare air bottles, a 1,500 GPM pump, 500 gallons of water, electric cord reels, cribbing, a portable generator for hydraulic tools, and a variety of extinguishers.
Once the radios are installed, the unit will be officially put into service. Until then, it remains a valuable addition to the department’s arsenal, ready to assist in any emergency. The new design reflects modern firefighting needs, emphasizing efficiency, safety, and functionality.
