On Sunday morning, the Maywood Fire Department responded to a significant fire at a vacant three-story building located at 907 S. 3rd Ave. The incident escalated quickly, prompting the department to pull a Box Alarm due to heavy flames in the attic and on the top floor. Both Maywood and Melrose Park fire crews were dispatched and worked together to contain the blaze. Gordon J. Nord, Jr., a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several powerful images that showcase the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the firefighters. His photos provide a vivid look at the emergency response, highlighting the challenges faced by the crews as they worked to control the fire. One image shows a Melrose Park lieutenant surveying the rear of the building before deploying their aerial ladder. Another captures the Melrose Park quint in action in front of the fire building. A third photo features firefighters from the Melrose Park unit inspecting conditions on the upper floor after removing plywood from a window. Other shots include Maywood firefighters working from the tip of their aerial ladder, flames breaking through the roof, and the Melrose Park truck operating its master stream. Both departments applied water through the roof, while Maywood crews worked to gain better access to the attic fire. A firefighter from Maywood is seen using a pike pole to open up a larger area, and another image shows flames bursting over the head of a firefighter working from the aerial. These images offer a compelling visual account of the intense firefighting operation that unfolded early Sunday morning. A more extensive gallery of photos can be viewed HERE.
