Another department in MABAS Division 12 has recently been added to the website. The Oak Brook Terrace Fire District is a small but efficient department that operates from a single station, covering a 2.5-square-mile area. Their team includes a mix of full-time and part-time firefighters, ensuring reliable coverage for the community. The station is well-equipped with a variety of apparatus, including two fire engines, a tower ladder, two ambulances, a TRT trailer, and a utility pickup.
Notably, they recently introduced a brand-new Spartan/Marion engine into service, marking a shift in their fleet from white-over-red to black-over-red units. This transition reflects a modernization effort while still maintaining the department’s strong legacy. The other engine and tower ladder are both E-ONE models, and the ambulances were manufactured by Medtec, showcasing a mix of high-quality brands in their equipment lineup.
Chicago is widely recognized as the birthplace of the Snorkel in the fire service, and the greater Chicago area once had a large concentration of these aerial devices. Many departments in the region used Snorkels of various boom lengths, often built by different manufacturers. Before acquiring their 95-foot E-ONE tower ladder in 1991, the Oak Brook Terrace Fire District operated an unusual 85-foot Snorkel on a conventional GMC 7000 chassis. This was one of the few Snorkels in the area not built on a Ford C-Series, International cab-over, or custom chassis, making it a unique piece of fire truck history.

This 1964, 85' Pitman Snorkel preceded the E-ONE tower ladder in Oak Brook Terrace. Shown here at their old station, the body was built by Pierce on a GMC 7000 chassis with a V-12 engine.
