3 Fire Chiefs: A Loss, a Resignation, and a Retirement (The Secret List)
Sunday, August 14, 2011 – Here’s a special update on three fire chiefs who have made an impact in their own ways. One has left us after a long and meaningful career, another stepped down due to concerns about liability, and a third is retiring after decades of service. This one hits close to home.
1 – CHIEF PAUL BOECKER – RIP “LISLE WOODRIDGE FIRE CHIEF AND NATIONAL FIRE SERVICE LEADER†If you’ve been around the fire service for a while, you might remember Chief Paul Boecker — a larger-than-life figure known for his big cigars, bigger personality, and incredible contributions to the fire community. He was active at the IAFC, ISFSI, IFSI, NFPA, and many other organizations. Janet from Fire Chief Magazine wrote a touching tribute about him, which you can read below.

Good Night, My Friend, My Mentor and My ChiefJanet Wilmoth – August 11th, 2011My chief is dying. The tubes and wires have been removed, the do-not-resuscitate order is in place, and he's in a deep sleep — unaware of the heartache growing around him. His journey has been long and difficult, ending with a fall that caused a severe brain bleed. As I stood by his hospital bed, watching his slow, steady breaths, I thought back to the first time I met Paul “Bud†Boecker. It was at the Lisle Volunteer Fire Department station, just after he arrived from Naperville. He was only the second full-time fire chief hired by Lisle. (The first lasted just six months.) The two departments were rivals, and Boecker once called Lisle a “Mickey Mouse department.†Now here he was, their fire chief. He brought energy, leadership, and a vision that transformed the department. Over the years, he became more than a boss — he was a mentor, a friend, and a leader who inspired everyone around him. His legacy will live on in every firefighter who had the privilege of working under him.
