At around 6:45 PM on Tuesday, the Gurnee Fire Department received multiple calls from drivers on Grand Avenue reporting heavy smoke coming from the Vista Hotel at 6161 W. Grand Avenue. The hotel, which had previously operated as a Holiday Inn, was closed and undergoing renovations. When crews arrived, they found significant smoke and flames in the ballroom area, which is separated from the guest rooms by an open lobby. Engine 1322 attempted to enter through the main entrance to prevent the fire from spreading but faced intense heat and heavy flames fueled by stored furniture. They withdrew and shifted to a defensive position.

Within 15 minutes, the incident was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm, followed by a second alarm shortly after. After about 45 minutes, the call escalated to a fifth alarm, reflecting the severity of the situation.

Due to long hose lines across Grand Avenue, the road was temporarily closed. Engines from Mundelein and Beach Park had to use hydrants on the opposite side of the street. The fire was largely contained to the ballroom, which was completely destroyed, with some spread into the lobby. Over 23 departments from Lake County's Division 4, along with others from Divisions 3 and 5, responded. This included units from Round Lake, Antioch, Fox Lake, Mundelein, Beach Park, Pleasant Prairie (WI), Libertyville, Newport, Zion, Waukegan, Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Lake Zurich, Spring Grove, Long Grove, Countryside, Great Lakes, Lake Forest, Lake Villa, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Highland Park, Wauconda, plus the MABAS Division 5 Air Unit and the MESS Canteen.
