On Saturday, the Palatine Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire located within the Cook County Forest Preserve area, near the intersection of Lake-Cook Road and Rand Road. Responding from Dee Road, which lies west of Rand Road and just east of Lake-Cook, Battalion 8 arrived with Engine 82 and Lake Zurich Engine 4. Upon arrival, they found flames burning through tall grass in an area that is mostly marshland, with soft, soggy ground covering much of the terrain.
Due to the challenging conditions, brush rigs could not be used, so firefighters had to approach on foot until the Cook County Forest Preserve District Wildland Team arrived. Several pickup trucks equipped with skid-mounted units and an ATV fitted with a small tank and booster line joined the effort.
The scene was captured by photographer Larry Shapiro, who documented the efforts of the crews as they stretched hundreds of feet of hose lines to attack the fire and protect nearby homes and businesses. The fire was particularly difficult to control due to high winds, which pushed the flames rapidly across the dry grass and marshy land.
As the fire grew in intensity, more resources were called in. Palatine Fire Department initiated a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm, bringing in additional personnel to manage the situation and ensure the fire did not spread to any structures. By around 10 p.m., the fire was under control, and the alarm was called off.
