The event will take place on June 18th (for rule announcements and meat distribution) and June 19th (for the actual tasting and judging) during the Johnston Green Days Festival. This year’s competition isn’t just about great barbecue — it’s also a way for us to support a meaningful cause. The funds raised will help send local youth from Johnston to an international camp called TOKA, where they’ll have the opportunity to visit our sister city, Peja, Kosovo. It’s an incredible cultural experience that students won’t find anywhere else — one that goes beyond the classroom and fosters global understanding. As a department, we believe in supporting the community in every way possible, and this event is a perfect example of that commitment. Teams are made up of at least one member from law enforcement, fire services, military, or public safety. We’ll provide the pork loin, ribs, and whole chicken, and all you need to do is bring your grilling skills and a team spirit. Last year’s turnout was between 1,500 and 2,000 people, and we’re hoping to make it even bigger this year. It’s not just about the competition — it’s about camaraderie, community, and giving back. Plus, there are bragging rights, a *Smoking Heroes Championship Belt*, and cash prizes up for grabs!
