Dan McInerney captured the Still and Box Alarm on Sheridan Road yesterday and shared several photos from the scene with the following account:
Around 2:45 PM on Friday, the 9th Battalion received a still alarm for a fire at 5757 N. Sheridan (later corrected to 5747 N. Sheridan). The Fire Alarm Officer classified it as a working fire, then upgraded it to a still in a high-rise. As the battalion approached the intersection of Sheridan and Hollywood, they called for a still and box alarm. Upon arrival, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the third floor of a three-story townhome measuring 75 by 125 feet. The building was directly adjacent to a 30-story high-rise to the south.
Engine 70 deployed their leader line and quickly controlled the fire, while Truck 47 extended a ladder from a nearby parking lot to access the roof. The high-rise response was held back to ensure that the stairwells of the high-rise were not affected and to prevent the building from becoming an exposure. The staging area was set up at Hollywood and Sheridan, which is the northern entrance to Lake Shore Drive (LSD), causing significant traffic congestion during the late afternoon, especially with the air show winding down.
