Hello, This is Sgt. Grandon from the Johnston Police Department in Iowa. I’m reaching out to invite you to our annual event, *Smokin’ Heroes*, a fun and competitive smoking competition that takes place during the Johnston Green Days Festival. The event runs from the evening of June 18th (for rule explanations and meat distribution) through June 19th (for tasting and judging). This year’s competition is not just about great barbecue — it’s also a way for us to support a meaningful cause. All proceeds from the event will help fund youth from Johnston to attend an international camp called TOKA, where they’ll have the incredible opportunity to visit our sister city, Peja, Kosovo. This experience offers a unique cultural exchange that can’t be replicated in a classroom, and it reflects our department’s commitment to fostering community growth and global connections. The competition brings together teams from the police, fire, and military departments, all competing for bragging rights, the coveted *Smoking Heroes Championship Belt*, and cash prizes. We’ll provide the pork loin, ribs, and whole chicken — all you need is at least one member from law enforcement, fire, military, or public safety on your team. Last year, over 1,500 to 2,000 people attended, and we hope to see even more this year. It's a great chance to enjoy some delicious food, meet local heroes, and support a wonderful cause.
